Audi AG has released an updated replacement for its A8 sedan at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. The model to go on sale in 2014 will feature mildly revised sheet metal as well as the latest LED lighting technology for both front and rear lights.
In addition to the minor cosmetic changes, Audi has reworked the engines offered in the A8. While displacement remains the same in the 4.0L TFSI engine power has been boosted by 15HP for a new peak output of 435HP. Expect 0 to 100 km/h to come up in 4.5 seconds and fuel consumption has been estimated at 9.1 litres per 100 kilometers under more reserved conditions. Aiding in the stingy fuel economy figures is Audi’s cylinder on demand system which deactivates four of the eight cylinders under partial load.
The 3.0T remains however some mention has been made that the mechanical supercharger can be deactivated on this model, why, we are not sure. In Germany a pair of available diesel TDI engines have seen power boosts however it is not clear is any of the engine changes described here will make it to North America.
One of the biggest complaints on the current A8 has likely been its limited trunk space. The storage capacity had been 13.2 cubic feet or 374 litres. Audi has redesigned the trunk layout and has boosted this figure to 520 litres or 18.36 cubic feet.
The lighting changes include the addition of optional Matrix LED lighting. The system is composed of 25 separate LED segments which can be individual activated or turned off. The headlight array also includes revised cornering lights, new-look daytime running lights as well as dynamic turn signals.
Although the rear taillights have been cosmetically tweaked, the most noticeable physical feature of the car will undoubtedly be the revised front headlights. All A8’s (except for the hybrid model) will now come standard with Quattro all wheel drive.
